Six Moon Designs Skyscape Tents - Only 24 or 34 ounces

Ultralight backpacking tents have significantly evolved over the last decade. These new one and a half to two pound (one to two people) tents are a far cry from the five pound tents backpackers have traditionally carried. Their roots stem from transforming your traditional tarp by adding shape, bug protection and a floor. Like a tarp, they are designed to be both light and airy.

Newer fabrics have become available that help to save a considerable amount of weight. These tents leave behind the double wall construction of traditional backpacking tents. A significant amount of weight reduction comes from eliminating your normal tent structure. By utilizing your existing hiking poles, you can save the weight of the tent poles. Plus, you're hiking poles perform dual duty. By their nature, hiking poles are significantly stronger than your tent pole. This allows you to have an extremely sturdy shelter.

While these tents can significantly reduce your pack weight, they do require a bit more knowledge to get the most performance. By managing the moisture in your tent and making the best use of ventilation, you can enjoy an ultralight tent. Ultralight backpacking tents have significantly evolved over the last decade. All Skyscape models utilize a dual (trekking or optional fixed length) pole support structure, slightly offset from the center of the tent. The offset yields extra headroom when lying down, reducing that claustrophobic feeling. Further, it allows the Skyscape to be extremely rigid when guyed out, creating a structure capable of riding out the worst storms.

The Skyscape employs Hybrid Double Wall construction. Over 80% of the canopy is separated from you by a mesh wall, keeping that wet canopy at bay. The Hybrid Double Wall construction allows the vestibule to roll back. On warm summer nights, convert the Skyscape into a net tent, pesky bugs stay outside while you enjoy the views and breezes.

The Skyscape's large side entry door lets you easily enter the tent or retrieve gear. You have vestibules on each side. With floor length over 100 inches, the Skyscape accommodates the tallest hikers. You can carry a light tent and still sleep well.

To extend the Skyscape, add the optional porch. The porch can be configured to match weather conditions. It's perfect for watching the rain, cooking a meal, invite a friend over or to snag some shade in open country. Our pictures show the porch with hiking poles, but most hikers use available sticks for the porch.

Trekker Model

The canopy and floor of the Trekker are constructed with silicone nylon. This fabric has been the workhorse of fabrics used to build ultralight tents for the last decade. Its main properties are its strength, light weight, and that it’s impervious to mold or mildew. McNett Sil-Net is the correct seam sealer for the Trekker.

Scout Model

The canopy and floor of the Scout are constructed with 190T Polyester. Since this fabric is used in literally millions of tents, it is very cost effective. A seam sealer for polyurethane fabric is correct for sealing this tent. Incorporating Polyester fabric into the Scout makes it the most affordable ultralight tent on the market today. The Scout is perfect for those starting to explore the world of ultralight travel.
